EPPO Plant Protection Thesaurus (EPPT)
including the EPPO code system (formerly BAYER code system) |
 |
EPPT is now a free online database (http://eppt.eppo.org)
The EPPO Plant Protection Thesaurus (EPPT online version) covers organisms important in agriculture and crop protection: crops, pests (including pathogens and weeds), natural enemies, and organisms used in ecotoxicological studies. From June 2007, EPPT is directly and freely available from this web site. This new feature allows the EPPO Secretariat to provide its users with a database that is always up-to-date.
However, for users who still want to use CDs, a CD-Rom version can be ordered from the EPPO Secretariat (see below).
For each organism EPPT provides:
- preferred scientific name
- EPPO (Bayer) code
- other scientific names
- common names in many languages
- taxonomic relationships and other
classifications
For most organisms which are also included in PQR (EPPO database on quarantine pests), EPPT provides maps of geographical distribution as well as documents related to the pest species chosen (i.e. articles from the EPPO Reporting Service). These will eventually be provided for all such organisms in PQR.
An example of data provided by EPPT

At present, about 28,000 species of plants (cultivated plants, wild plants and weeds), 19,200 species of animals (especially insects, mites and nematodes) and 4,300 species of microorganisms, including viruses are included in EPPT.
EPPO Code System (formerly BAYER code system) for licensed users only
The EPPO Plant Protection Thesaurus includes the core data files of the EPPO Code System which was previously available as a set of books edited by BAYER or data files on CDs. This coding system is now managed by EPPO and BAYER codes can now be called EPPO codes.
The EPPO Code System provides computer codes for the names of pests, host plants and other organisms relevant to plant protection. These codes can be freely viewed in EPPT but cannot be downloaded from the online database without permission. Because many users of the EPPO code system may wish to include EPPO codes in their own internal databases, a licence can be obtained from the EPPO Secretariat, in order to receive the necessary passwords and to use the data in this way.
A licensed user of the EPPO Code System is free to use the data within the computer network of an institution in a single country, for the use of the staff of that institution. The EPPO Code System may not be incorporated into a computer-based information system which is more widely distributed or offered for sale, unless this is explicitly authorized by EPPO.
Licensed users can:
- download at any time all EPPO codes from the database via the Internet
- request new codes to be created
- access a forum dedicated to EPPT and the EPPO codes
The fee for the right to download the latest version of the EPPO Code System at any time is 150 EUR per year.

EPPT on CD-Rom
For users who still prefer to use CD-Rom versions, a stand-alone version for use on a single PC (running Windows 95, 98, NT 4.0 or XP) can be obtained on request. The EPPO Plant Protection Thesaurus on CD can be ordered from the EPPO Secretariat at a price of 20 EUR.
To order: Download the order form in English or in French. |
