Development of EPPO Standards on Plant Protection Products

 

  Efficacy Evaluation of Plant Protection Products
These standards describe the conduct of field and glasshouse trials carried out to assess the efficacy of plant protection products (insecticides, acaricides, fungicides, herbicides, plant growth regulators ...) against specific pests by comparison with reference product(s). Each guideline gives details on experimental conditions, application of treatments, mode of assessment, recording and measurements, and on how to report results.

Panel on Efficacy Evaluation of
Insecticides and Fungicides

At present, more than 200 standards have been prepared by several Panels (Panels for the efficacy evaluation of fungicides and insecticides, of herbicides and plant growth regulators, general standards, rodent control, and Ad hoc panel on resistance risk assessment) and officially approved by the EPPO Council. General standards are freely available from this website, specific standards are sold as brochures.

  Environmental Risk Assessment of Plant Protection Products
These standards are parts of a decision-making scheme for the environmental risk assessment of plant protection products which was developed by a joint Panel of EPPO and the Council of Europe (Panel on environmental risk assessment of plant protection products). They provide guidelines on how to assess the potential impact of a particular plant protection products on various elements of the environment (e.g. air, soil, ground water, honeybees, terrestrial vertebrates). The aims of these standards are to:
  • guide assessors on the questions that should be addressed, and the data that may be requested from registrants;
  • provide information on the test methods and approaches that are suitable in each case;
  • indicate how the data should be interpreted in a consistent manner, involving expert judgement where appropriate;
  • produce a reliable assessment of environmental risk, as a suitable aid to risk management (though the assessment scheme will not provide all the information needed for decisions on the acceptability of plant protection products

 

  Good Plant Protection Practice
These standards describe the optimal practice in protecting specific crops against their pests, including pathogens and weeds. So for each major crop of the EPPO region, they cover methods for controlling pests (including pathogens and weeds), with plant protection products, by cultural methods, by use of resistant cultivars, by biological control etc. The main pests present in all parts of the EPPO region are considered. For each pest, details are given on biology and development, appropriate control strategies are described, and if relevant, examples of active substances which can be used for chemical control are mentioned, if relevant. At present, more than 30 standards have been prepared by the Panel on good plant protection practice and officially approved by the EPPO Council.
